I just discovered this blog from a reference at Friendly Atheist and I read your post about The Plague, one of my favorite books. May I also suggest another book that is not "entertaining" but it unputdownable, "Voyage au bout de la nuit" by Céline. It is not a happy story but as Nietzsche would say, "Human, all to human."
Since you know France, you might want to take a look at the blog Superfrenchie by a French guy living in the U.S.
