I got a comic published in Sunstone Magazine!!

Sunstone's big comics issue just arrived in the mail -- including the above comic by yours truly!!

As you may recall, the deadline was too short for me to have time to draw something just for Sunstone, so I took the lazy-artist's route, and sent in some illustrations from my novel ExMormon with captions supplied by readers. As you can see, the winning caption was provided by Sabayon. (Note to Sabayon: I wrote in my bio sketch that you provided the caption, but the editors cut that part off, so all I can really offer you is the joy of knowing in your heart that you've been published in the Sunstone comics issue -- sorry!)

Here are the other panels I submitted, which didn't make the cut:

Finally updated my masthead!!

I've been living in Switzerland for three years now, so it was getting to be time to replace the old masthead that I drew for France (the one with the word France crossed out and Switzerland written in). I spent all morning on this one, but I'm not totally thrilled with it. I'm thinking maybe I should try again...

*** ETA: OK, I redid the masthead. Here's my first attempt:

The second one is better, don't you think?

BTW, here's mo old masthead, for comparison:

Also, I've thrown away all of my sidebar junk, and I'm slowly replacing it with updated stuff. Bear with me for the moment on the missing blogroll, etc.

Six of Pentacles

So, I've finally gotten my act together sufficiently to participate in the final day of John Remy's creativity experiment. Today's theme is the six of pentacles.

Here's the part of the "six of pentacles" I'm illustrating:

having/not having resources
taking care of/being taken care of
supporting/being supported

having/not having power
leading/following
dominating/submitting

Naturally, I'm also thinking a bit about my recent discussion with mathmom (see the comments), and I'm starting to think there's quite a bit more to be said about a comprehensive/inclusive feminist theory. Stay tuned! :D

Hanukkah Sparkles!

Remember the Hanukkah party we went to last December?

Well, I'm still sorting boxes from our move, and I found this cute drawing that Leo did right after attending that party:

Vote in the 2009 Brodies!!

If you're following Main Street Plaza, you probably already know that author Walter Kirn won 2009 William Law X-Mormon of the year, and that he has publicly accepted the award.

Now we're following up with another series of awards -- the Brodies -- for X-Mormon online excellence!! You can vote for excellent posts, sites, and people in twenty-two different categories.

And, on a totally unrelated note, look at this drawing my 6-year-old Leo made in Tux Paint:

Dream House

The most bizarre recurring dream I've ever had was about my old house in Bordeaux.

In real life I loved that house. It was an old stone townhouse that was right in town. It was on a quiet residential street, but the whole walkable downtown area was just a few blocks away. It was relatively large -- not by American standards, but it was two stories, plus a partially-finished attic for guests. And it was "healthy" in the sense that the basement was dry and the wooden framework holding up the floors was solid. But...

Superficially, everything was in poor condition. The house was more than 100 years old, and looked it. When we first moved in, we had to replace all of the electrical wiring, all of the plumbing (the pipes were lead), and the roof. We had no money left over to fix up the rest.

Everything was old and a little bit broken, like the drafty windows from the pre-saftey glass, pre-standardized-window-sizes era and the hardwood floors that gave us splinters. It would have been the ideal house for someone with a passion for "DIY" (or at least someone not already overburdened by toddlers + working full-time), but we had neither the time nor the abilities to fix it up. So my beloved house was a constant source of stress.

And that's how it entered my dreams.

In dream world, the house was in poorer condition, with holes in the roof that let in weather and weak spots in the floor for people to fall through. But it was also a lot bigger, and full of strange secret passages. It had whole apartments (that we didn't use) hidden beyond secret panels.

But the weird part was the house in the back yard. Our real-life city yard was about the same size as the footprint of the house itself. But in dream world, the house had a huge back yard, and in the back yard was an even bigger and older house.

The backyard house was five stories tall and practically in ruins. Since it hadn't been officially used in decades, who knows what had unofficially taken up residence? Some of the rooms had dead bodies hidden away in them. I wouldn't dream of trying to fix up the backyard house -- I was terrified to go in it. Yet, that's not what was weird about it.

What was weird was that the backyard house was always there, even though it didn't exist in real life. It was a regular fixture of my dream universe, as though dream world were a consistent, warped universe, not just a random walk through making-it-up-as-you-go-along.

Is your dream universe like that?

Yay, I finished the illustrations!!

Normally, I like to keep them as a surprise as each chapter is posted. But I don't think you can guess the whole story just by looking at the illustrations or the character chart, so (as an experiment or preview) I've posted them on an illustrations page!

This means I'll have no trouble getting Part VII: Orem High ready for the February 10th start date! All that's left to do is the page layout and write the caution/disclaimer...

More fab blog art!!!

I hope you're all as excited as I am about the fact that Main Street Plaza is going to be running a Mormon fiction series!!!

Robert Raleigh, who edited the anthology In Our Lovely Deseret: Mormon Fictions, will be directing the project, and he's picked a great story to start the ball rolling: "Love, Mormon Style," by Bob Bringhurst!!! This is one of my favorites from his anthology, as I mentioned in my review.

For fun, I was thinking that each story should have a graphic (hopefully to be used as a sidebar button -- still working with tech on this), and since "Love, Mormon Style" is clearly a reference to the old television comedy "Love, American Style," I couldn't help but want to do a riff on the "Love, American Style" logo for this one!!!

The problem of course was that I had no idea what the "Love, American Style" logo looks like since I've never seen the show (indeed I probably wouldn't have heard of it if my dad hadn't mentioned it a few times). But such a setback isn't a problem for long in our magical modern Internet era -- wikipedia to the rescue!!!

The Wikipedia entry provided the following graphic:

Which I "improved" as follows:

;-)

The plan is to get some other artists to do some of the graphics since my cartoony style doesn't necessarily match the tone of many of the stories and it's better if they don't all look alike. Meanwhile I haven't completed a single new illustration yet for Youth Conference, which is scheduled to begin April 17...

Dangit, there are too many exciting things going on in blogspace -- it's hard to keep track of it all, much less have a real-world life on the side... ;-)

Cute Mormon Kid Drawings...

My brother posted to his blog here some really cute LDS-themed drawings that he did when he was six years old:

So many churches, but which one is true?

Mormon pioneers head west amid much persecution and volcanos.

I know he posted these a while ago, but I just felt like reposting them to my own blog today...

I know I'm biased on this ;-), but he is so clever!!! He and Mike have some really funny stuff over there, like this The Pride of the Nephites: Vanity Plates feature that ran in the Student Review back in our BYU days...
