Europride Zürich '09!!!

I've learned (just from my usual wandering about town) that Europe has a yearly Gay Pride festival called "EuroPride," and this year it was held in Zürich!!!

So -- since one of my roles in this blog is to bring Zürich to you -- Léo and I went down and took pictures of the parade:

Here, we're waiting for the parade to arrive. The sky looked a little menacing, but could be worse...

Léo (and the other kids in the audience) couldn't wait to get a balloon!

The sign reads "Pour la famille une seule orientation: l'amour !" (Only one orientation for the family: love!)

This was definitely a colorful parade!

With plenty of feathers...

... and flowers ...

... and bubbles ...

... and more feathers ...

... and more bubbles ...

Here you can see straight across to the grumpy spectators on the other side: "In my day, lesbians did not parade down the street in inner tubes..."

Local businesses got into the act,

as well as groups from other cities,

not to mention international organizations...

There were divas galore!

... exotic ...

... as well as traditional.

The gals seemed friendly, yet (on the whole),

not quite as theatrical as the guys...
(edit: now that I look at this photo more closely, I see two guys are texting people while parading. If that's not a comment on our modern lifestyle, I don't know what is...)

"Hmm, are we almost to the end of the parade route? Hope we won't be needing these rainbow umbrellas..."

We saw the entire parade in the sunshine, but, unfortunately, there was a torrential downpour shortly after it passed. I'm not sure the whole parade made it to the end without getting soaked...

Thanks for the great pictures. My city's pride parade has also become kind of a family event. Lots of straight couples come with their kids. They cheer for the brigade of librarians pushing book carts and for the precision briefcase drill team.

Hey MoHoHawaii!!!

Wow, that sounds like fun!!! We didn't have anything quite like that here.

But (like your local parade) this one was a real family event!!! Lots of kids, lots of families (gay and straight), and lots of colorful street theater. To me, it was very much a popular affirmation of the importance of human rights as something to care about, not to be complacent about.

Hey that's great! Good photos!! I missed seeing it today because I mistakenly accepted another appointment.

Thanks Victor!!!

That's too bad -- you missed a great show!!!

I want a rainbow umbrella! How come the ones you can carry in your bag are always kind of lame? I saw a bug umbrella that was super cute, but it was not something that could be carried in a bag. Oh, and also it was for kids. Small detail.

Tangent.

Parade! That looks like a fun one.

I wonder if the two guys in the photo are texting each other?

My sister-in-law was sad when she had to miss Portland's Pride parade because she was coming to visit us, so she made up for it by buying our kids rainbow umbrellas.

That sounds fabulous. The SLC Pride is this weekend too, and the parade is tomorrow morning.

Zürich's looks a lot more fun though.

Wow! It did not seem from the pics to be as colorful as the pride parade in SF. Did they have a Dyke's on bikes brigade?

Hey Rebecca!!!

Yeah, the rainbow umbrellas were cool, and there were a lot of them! I guess the weather report clued them in to be prepared. Unfortunately, the rainstorm was one of those amazing like-the-sky-is-pouring-a-bucket-on-you affairs. Léo and I were absolutely drenched through by the time we got home. I hope the paraders made out OK...

Hey Mr. Fob!!!

lol, that would be too funny!

Hey Craig!!!

That's cool! Will you be in it?

Hey Beat Dad!!!

Hmm, no I didn't see any dykes on bikes. It's funny (yet somehow not surprising) if the Europe-wide yearly pride festival can't compete with San Francisco. On the other hand, keep in mind that my photography skills are limited, so I'm probably not doing the parade justice...

So, was there an asexual contingent there?

C. L. Hanson said...

Hey Chaplain!!!

Yeah, it was cool -- I'm glad I went!

Hey Sinister Porpoise!!!

There wasn't a group carrying signs or wearing t-shirts to that effect, but asexuals may well have been represented.

Just brougt it up because a group did join in the recent San Francisco parade.

Wow, that's cool!! I think the SF one has a greater variety of different groups -- probably because the queer community in the area is so large and varied.
