I wonder what all of those celebrity Hansons are up to today...

One of those weird automatically-generated-by-topic blog agglomerators has latched onto my last few posts, and it's a particularly stupid one that seems to think my blog contains info on the band called "Hanson."

On an unrelated note, the press seems to be reporting that Sarkozy just won the election. As you might guess, that's not the outcome I was hoping for. If I had any interesting or insightful commentary about the situation, I'd be posting it right here.

Which one was Sarkozy? I'm sorry but it's hard to sort through over here I only saw it mentioned once and didn't really care as one of the candidates was presetned as the typical American-Hating Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey. (You can guess which news network I was watching at the time.)

Then again I feel guilty because I had to look up who the Prime Minister of Canada is...

Sarkozy is the right-wing guy.

The Economist described the three main candidates (prior to the first round) as bad, worse, and worst. Sarkozy was the bad. He's the Amerophile.

Other Northern European countries have successfully revitalized their economies without sacrificing their social systems. But it's not clear that the French are willing to loosen labor law restrictions even though they voted for Sarkozy. As my local French friend said yesterday, "Nothing will change as long as the French are French."

I find it difficult when people get elected that I strongly disagree with (take the 2004 US election).

My only comfort is that at least the elections (for the most part) in this country are free and fair. The majority of people are not disenfrancised and no one is threatened with death or negative consequences for voting.

And we can disagree politically without getting violent about it.

That's just my take. I heard about the French election on the news this morning and wondered what you thought. I was hopeful that a woman would be elected there. Ah well.

Hey Sam-I-Am!!!

I don't know -- I'm a little hesitant about taking a complacent attitude that the French character won't allow things to change significantly here. I'm generally pretty optimistic about the direction France and Europe are going, but to see Sarkozy win by such a wide margin has me a little discouraged...

Hey Aerin!!!

Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool that there ws a possibility that a woman might be elected president here. As some have pointed out though, France has no tradition of female rulers (unlike, say, England which had some important queens). It's likely that sexism -- and especially hesitance about following a female leader -- played a role in the outcome of the election.

Non-violent change of power is nice, but I should not that the American electoral system in the last elections has been severely tainted with very compelling charges of high-level tampering and manipulation based upon serious and compelling evidence. Given the movement to paperless electronic voting without any sort of hardcopy accounting, electoral systems based on this methodology will generally be matters of unverifiable faith.

Hey Gluby!!!

Well, don't say I haven't been stumping for reform of the presidential election system (hint hint).
